Dr. B.L. Kapur, a renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist, established the BLK Super Specialty Hospital in 1959. Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, India's then-Prime Minister, made the announcement. The NABH and NABL accreditations have been granted to the mega specialist hospital. It has 650 beds and 17 new, well-equipped mobile service theatres. The BLK Super Specialty Hospital is the first in the NCR area to build and use an automated pneumatic chute system, which improves patient care. It has one of the largest critical care programmes in the country, with 125 beds in medical, surgical, cardiac, paediatrics, neonatology, neuroscience intensive care units Organ Transplant departments.
There are over 150 senior specialists employed by different specialisation divisions. Some of India's best cancer doctors (Dr. Dabbas) work at the hospital. The hospital also has a dedicated facility called Emergency and Acute Care Medicine, where specially qualified Emergency Physicians and Nurses provide rapid diagnosis, assessment, and management in life-threatening medical emergencies. The BLK Bone Marrow Transplant Centre, one of Asia's largest, has been awarded the first MUD (Match Unrelated Donor) Transplant in Delhi.
